Firas Aboulezz winning goal against Swieqi United
Gudja United kept hold of the second place with a narrow win over Swieqi United and secured its sixth consecutive win. After losing heavily to leaders Sirens back in December, Gudja has come back to win six straight wins in a row against San Gwann, Mqabba, Pembroke, Zebbug, Vittoriosa and Swieqi United.
This Saturday afternoon at the Victor Tedesco Stadium was quite a photo copy of previous Gudja matches with the Blues taking early control of the situation with constant possession of the ball. The opponents, as the ones before them, were most of the time left with their only options being the counter attacks.
The first clear scoring opportunity for Gudja arrived in the 10th minute when Emerson Vella defended the ball well in his own half, advanced a few metres and with a fine long pass found Rafael Kooh Sohna alone in front of the goalkeeper with the latter closing well on Rafa and turned his shot into corner.
Swieqi reacted well and in the 14th minute Kenneth Ekezi broke through Gudja's defence but his shot hit the side netting. It was Gudja again with the ball for most of the time but Swieqi defense was well organized. In the 24th minute, Firas Aboulezz dribbles through the opposing defense from the left side, passes to the middle but his deflected pass crosses on the line and ends up in corner. Another scoring opportunity for Gudja saw Leejoe Schembri's deflected shot being turned into corner by goalkeeper Debattista in the 29th minute. But following the events of the corner from the usual Jackson Lima, it was FIRAS ABOULEZZ who with a close range header found the back of the net and put Gudja one up.
It was only in the dying minutes of the first half that we experienced another Swieqi United scoring opportunity. Following a corner situation, Kenneth Ekezi went high enough to head the ball but Jonathan Debono responded well with a miraculous save from the top corner. Debono again stopped Swieqi's rebound shot to save the result for Gudja.
In the Second half the score remained the same. Gudja failed to double the lead on several occasions. The clearest scoring opportunity happened to Leejoe Schembri when he dribbled around the Swieqi defence, cut into the middle of the pitch and fired a long curved shot towards the post but Debattista turned it into corner with a fine save.
Swieqi United tried to react but Gudja United's back line was impeccable. Another 3 Points for Gudja and a total of 35 points in the table.
