Gudja United beat Zejtun Corinthians 3-2 and are now sitting only one step away from making a historic promotion to the Maltese Premier League as St. Lucia were stunned by Pembroke Athleta earlier this afternoon with a 93rd minute goal.
The initial minutes of the match saw both teams trying to impose their play but none of the two teams were able to create any serious opportunities.
Gudja started to gain some more possession and control of the match late in the first half and in the 44th minute, Jackson Lima exchanged the ball with LLYWELYN CREMONA who fired one home. Just one minute later, Firas Aboulezz tried his luck but goalkeeper Zammit saved the ball in two attempts.
The second half started as the first ended. Gudja were close again twice with Firas Aboulezz and Jackson Lima but once again Zejtun goalkeeper stood his ground and turned down Gudja's advances.
In the 69th minute, following a free kick situation, ADOLPHUS MARSHALLheaded the ball into the net to make it 2 nil. In the same instance, Gudja's scorer and Zejtun's goalkeeper collided and both had to be subbed off. Adolphus Marshall for Gudja suffered from head injury whilst Glenn Zammit for Zejtun suffered a hand injury.
Zejtun started to push forward trying to get one back and in the 74th minute they were awarded a very generous penalty from which Johan Castano scored. 10 minutes later Castano again equalized the score with a fine header.
Gudja reacted immediately and just two minutes later, only one minute after coming on to replace Shalon Diacono, DHONATAN SANTOS DA HORA tapped in a Jonathan Bondin shot and gave Gudja United the lead once again.
Gudja took all the 3 points from this match and are now sitting 10 points clear of third placed St. Lucia after the latter succumbed to Pembroke earlier this afternoon 0-1 with a goal scored in the 93rd minute.
Gudja will now face St. Lucia on Wednesday the 3rd of April at 20:15 at The Victor Tedesco Stadium in Hamrun. Should Gudja beat Santa Lucia, Gudja will be automatically promoted to the Maltese Premier League.
