GUDJA UNITED 1 - 1 HIBERNIANS
Gudja United FC grab 1 point at Hibernians' expense in the first ever match in the Maltese Premier League.
Gudja threatened to score five minutes into the match as Rundell Winchester turned around Maltese International Andrei Agius and sent an inviting ball into the box but Aiden Friggieri’s tap in hit the side netting.
A few minutes later, Hibernians scored through a Ferdinando Apap’s header but his goal was disallowed for an offside position.
Gudja looked in good shape and replied quickly through Gabriel Mensah who attempted on various occasions initially firstly with a first timer from a set piece. However, his effort failed to hit the target. Later when he beat the offside trap, chested down the ball but Goalkeeper Jovicic blocked his attempt.
In the dying minutes of the first half, Gudja United found a new hero in Goalkeeper and Captain Jonathan Debono as he saved the day on 2 clear occasions. First he turned Andrei Agius' advance into corner whilst a few minutes later he blocked a Bjorn Kristensen's header.
The Blues broke the deadlock immediately after the restart when Rundell Winchester almost opened the score only to see his effort hit the crossbar after he dribbled past 2 Hibernians defenders. A few seconds later Alexandre Carlos Santana whipped in a free-kick into the box on which JUSTIN GRIOLI arrived first and put the ball past goalkeeper Jovicic.
Gudja's lead did not last long as Jake Grech found the net from the edge of the area just 2 minutes later going 1 goal down.
A few moments later, Jake Grech tried his luck once again but his conclusion was far away from goal.
In the final stages of the match, Hibernians tried their best to take all the 3 points with a series of headers following set pieces situation, whilst Gudja responded with fast counter attacks which saw Trinidad and Tobago striker Rundell Winchester final tap in go just wide.
Gudja United FC and Hibernians FC share 1 point each in a thrilling encounter which could have easily gone either way.
